SMAA RULES

 

FORMS / KATA---------------------------------

1. NUMBER OF JUDGES –at least 3 judges per ring

2. UNIFORM -Player must wear a clean traditional or sport karate uniform with no foul language on it. T-shirts as part of a school uniform are allowed. All judges are asked to wear uniforms.

3. AGE-Player must compete at the age they are on January 1st at 12a.m.

4. BELT RANK -Must compete with the proper color belt worn for the division he/she is competing in and at the same rank in all divisions.

5. SEQUENCE -Luck of the Draw.

6. AVAILABILITY -When the division has been declared closed and/or the charting has started, no late entries are accepted...

7. RESTARTS -Blackbelts receive the minimum score, under belts receive a score, but get deducted 0.2 points off of the score that would have been earned before the restart.

8. MUSIC PLAYER - the competitors must provide their own music, player and someone to run it.

9. SCORING RANGE –all belts will be scored 8-10 (average 9.00). Judge must use the third number to avoid ties.

10. TIES- Both players compete again with the same or a different form (finals winners determine by the Judges' show of hands). Second ties are broken by a show of hands.

11. TRADITIONAL KATA- No splits, no gymnastics, no exercising extended leg control kicks. No Creative / Musical kata’s allowed in the Traditional kata division. Competitors will receive the minimum score if the techniques listed above are done in a traditional kata division.

12. CREATIVE / MUSICAL KATA- All splits, gymnastics, leg control & any techniques are allowed

13. SLIPS & FALLS- (a) If a competitor slips or falls during regular competition, then they have the choice to restart and will be deducted. (b) If a competitor slips and falls during any Grand Champion, they cannot restart and will be deducted.



WEAPONS--------------------------------------

1. SPECIFICATIONS -Weapons must be protected from sharpness and may be inspected upon the judge’s request.

2. WEAPON BREAKS -The player is given time to replace it with the same or a different weapon or can complete the form with the broken weapon without penalty, as long as it is not hazardous.



SPARRING-------------------------------------

1. NUMBER OF JUDGES -Each ring must have at least three (3) judges.

2. UNIFORM -Jewelry is not allowed. No metal can be worn on the uniform.

3. SAFETY EQUIPMENT -Mouth piece, groin cup (males), hand, foot, and head gear is required. Cups cannot be worn outside the uniform. If competitors do not wear the proper safety equipment, they cannot spar.

4. AGE -(same as forms)

5. BELT RANK -(same as Forms)

6. SEQUENCE- (same as forms)

7. AVAILABILITY- (same as forms)

8. TIME LIMIT -Up to two (2) minutes running time.

9. COACHING -Allowed from coaches' box and designated areas.

10. TIME OUT -A player or coach can call one (1) time out per match for up to ten (10) seconds when play IS already stopped.

11. SCORING AREAS - Head, front of body, and sides of body.

12. CONTACT - Definitions:
No Contact - Technique within a four (4) inch zone
Light. Just a touch, no blood.
Moderate - Slight penetration of opponent, no blood.
Excessive - Extreme penetration. possible bleeding.

13. PENALTIES & FOULS -Excessive contact, illegal techniques, contact to non-scoring areas, hitting after call to stop, out of bounds, dropping to the floor to avoid fighting and un-sportsman like conduct are subject to penalty points or disqualification by the Center Referee or with a majority vote by the Judges.
FACE CONTACT & GROIN PENALTIES · Hitting a face guard / face area is considered face contact
· 1st warning
· 2nd time point
· 3rd time Disqualification
· Disqualification determined by judge’s decision

14. OUT OF BOUNDS -Out of bounds is when neither foot is inside or touching the boundary line.

15. FORCED OUT VS. RUNNING OUT .A player is not penalized for fighting out or being forced out of the ring, but may be penalized one (1) point for running out to avoid fighting.

16. SCORING – One (1) point for a punch, Two (2) points for a kick.

17. NUMBER OF POINTS TO WIN -Options:
a) The player with the most points after two (2) minutes playing time.
b) Five point spread.

18. TIES -Result in sudden death overtime.

19. INJURY -The Center Referee or the medical personnel may prohibit a player from continuing due to injury
